Water Coning Control in Gas Well with Strong Water Drive Mechanism Reservoir

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019

Water coning is a condition where water from the aquifer zone goes to the gas zone vertically to the wellbore through the gas-water boundary. It happens because the well producing is exceed of its critical production rate (qg> qgcw) and forming a cone. Water coning is a problem that must be considered in gas well especially for strong water drive reservoir. In fact, water helps to push the gas into the drill hole, but it can reduce gas production in active condition. Therefore, it can affect the final recovery. This study is focused to discuss the well deliverability, specifically the Absolute Open Flow Potential (AOFP) with a rule of thumb in amount 30% of AOFP. The Maximum Efficiency Rate (MER) water coning free is calculated using the Chiericci method. Interval length sensitivity of perforation is carried out to obtain an optimal formation completion, so water coning can be controlled.
