Leadership to Support Oil and Gas Sector Adaptation in the Era of Energy Transition

At present, the government continues to achieve the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2050. To achieve this target, the oil and gas industry (oil and gas) must immediately adapt to low-carbon energy. One of the keys to the adaptation is to strengthen leadership in the oil and gas sector.

Good leadership and capability can help the oil and gas industry to adapt in the energy transition era. The capability of human resources (HR) involved in the oil and gas sector is a must in order to realize the targets set by the government.

This opinion was also agreed by the Deputy Chairman of SKK Migas, Fatar Yani Abdurrahman.

"We need people who have leadership, agility, and knowledge for this industry," he said at the Morning Talk Session of the 46th IPA Convention & Exhibition with the theme "Securing the Future Leaders of Indonesia's Oil and Gas Industry" at the Jakarta Convention Center. (JCC) on Friday, 23 September 2022.

In his presentation, Fatar also said that there are 24 types of skills needed in the upstream oil and gas industry. These skills are related not only to technical matters, but also to other things that support the industry.

Skills related to technical aspects include production technology, project management, and geology. While the supporting skills that are also needed include auditing, communication, accounting, and human resources (HR).

Fatar added that one of the challenges for the oil and gas industry in the midst of energy transition is the readiness of qualified and competitive human resources. HR has an important and strategic role.

The oil and gas industry requires human resources who are proficient in technology and also able to innovate since it is a challenging industry that involves technological developments, investment needs, and having high risk.

President Director of MedcoEnergi, Hilmi Panigoro, said that the company will always grow and target to continue exploring for the next 20 years.

In order to make this happen, people who have the capability will make a big contribution to the company.

"We still need professionals to help us achieve our targets in the future," said Hilmi.

Furthermore, Senior Partner Korn Ferry Angel Blanco said that younger generation is needed to contribute to the oil and gas industry because oil and gas demand will still dominate in the midst of transition to clean energy. "The oil and gas industry is still profitable for the world," he said.

Speaking about the younger generation, President of ExxonMobil Cepu Limited, Carol Gal, said that currently the younger generation should not hesitate to enter the world of oil and gas amid stronger issue of energy transition. This is because the oil and gas industry is very adaptive and flexible in the midst of various changes.

The oil and gas industry has experience adapting to several social challenges including the energy transition.

Finally, senior oil and gas practitioner and former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Purnomo Yusgiantoro, said that there is a need for paradigm changes so that human resources in the oil and gas industry do not only focus on production. Other sciences need to be developed in order to have economic and social impacts.

"We need to develop interdisciplinary cooperation programs," he concluded.
