Hydrocarbon Potential of the North Kutei Basin: new Exploration Opportunities based on the new 3D seismic Data

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 34th Ann. Conv., 2010

The northern part of Kutei Basin, Eastern Kalimantan, has long been neglected for hydrocarbon exploration. The area of study is located offshore from the Sangatta Field and north of the Attaka Field. Several companies have explored the area previously, such as Union Oil in the 1970s and Total Indonesie in the 1980s. No exploration has been carried out on the shelf area since the drilling of Tutung-1 well in 1983. Exploring the potential of the deep water play in this area was limited to a few early SX (Saturated Exploration) wells, which new 3D data has shown to be not optimally located. The new 3D seismic volumes acquired in 2007 and 2008 confirm that the area of study contains the northern continuation of the slope channel play that has been discovered elsewhere in the Kutei Basin. Previously, the area has only been covered by low quality 2D seismic, which does not allow combination and stratigraphic traps to be recognized. The new 3D seismic data shows the occurrence of Late Miocene-Early Pliocene slope channels, which are similar to those that have been discovered along trend to the South. This paper will show the new findings in the North Kutei Basin as the result of the new 3D seismic data, hydrocarbon play, remaining potential and the analogue to the already mature deep water play of Kutei Basin.
