Vibration induced fatigue, threats and mitigation

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 39th Ann. Conv., 2015

This paper presents a discussion of the physics of vibration induced fatigue problems applicable to the production facilities in Oil and Gas industry. The discussion will include a review of the common sources of piping vibration and provide a suggested methodology to identify and evaluate vibration-related problems and hazards. Various forms of vibration induced fatigue failures are explained and illustrated using industry-related examples. The paper aims to raise awareness of the risks associated with excessive vibration which may consequently lead to fatigue failures particularly as the result of changing operating process conditions. Most production facilities in the Oil and Gas industry will experience variations of the process conditions which may cause high levels of vibration of the equipment, leading to a high risk of failure and ultimately, production loss. Furthermore, the paper will discuss difficulties in identifying the root causes of process related vibration and recommended analytical techniques which may help avoid future vibration issues.
