Innovative Design of Multizone Single Trip Gravel Pack Using Shunt Tubes System to Reduce Operation Time in Tunu Field

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 40th Ann. Conv., 2016

Over 150 Multizone Single Trip Gravel Pack (MZ-STGP) wells have been utilized for producing shallow reservoir in Mahakam Delta since 2005 with good success rate. However, the system has reached its limits in term of total well cost, well deviation, and spacing between zones. Combining shunt tubes and MZ-STGP is considered one of the solutions to tackle those challenges allowing faster completion job with lower cost. Two (2) pilot wells have been completed with over 700 meters gross perforation interval in 1 trip. This paper will review completion design of shunt tube system, job execution, and post job gravel pack evaluation. Innovative design of MZ-STGP and shunt tube allows simultaneous gravel pack pumping on several zones. Shunt tubes are attached to screen joint with steel rings and penetrating through isolation cup packer for transferring proppant to lower zones. The results from both pilot wells are reviewed especially on simultaneous pumping. Gravel Pack evaluation using Gamma Ray Tool and production results from both wells shall be assessed and if applicable completion skin is analyzed. Moreover, operation time and cost will also be assessed to look for overall value of project performance. From lesson learnt, it is concluded that MZ-STGP and shunt tube delivers good performance in terms completion time thus meet the objective to bring down the total well cost. With thorough design, completion time can be cut by more than 3 days compared to standard MZ-STGP. In contrary, pumping design is crucial to ensure proper gravel pack result. Possible partial gravel packing was detected by Gamma Ray Tool Logging. Production logging result also highlights risk of proppant cross flow between zones that shall be carefully tackled during well life. These results gave essential inputs for future improvement for both pumping and completion design.
