Integrated analysis of Petani gas sands in selected fields Central Sumatra

An integrated analysis using both geological and geophysical data has enabled CPI to quickly identify and more accurately map smaller gas plays in existing fields. These smaller shallow gas accumulations merit attention because: 1.) they often constitute a drilling hazard while drilling to deeper objectives, and 2.) if they are close to surface gathering facilities, the gas might be utilized as an oil-substitute fuel for the Duri steamflood or for local energy needs.This study illustrates the use of an integrated approach to evaluating Petani gas sands. Seismic anomalies (amplitude, pushdown, etc.) are used to identify Petani gas sands and allow areal mapping beyond the areas of well controI. Seismic anomaly and time structure maps produced by the geophysicist at the seismic workstation are integrated with depth structure maps, sand isopach maps, facies maps, and log gas indications produced by the geologist. This integrated work process enables the quick evaluation of small gas plays that would otherwise not merit extended time and manpower.Specialized software is used in this work process. Western 2D-I (Two Dimensional Seismic Interpretation) and AIS (Advanced Interpretation Software for 3-D) was used to efficiently handle large amounts of seismic data previously loaded into CPI's extensive databases. Using these databases for multiple purposes enables CPI to get maximum value from new 3-D seismic data and additional value from older 2-ID data in line with the company's drive to create added value.Three fields are highlighted in this study, each of which had unique depositional and structural features that determined the ultimate gas distribution. In addition to reserves estimations and the identification of drilling hazards, integrated mapping has yielded insights into the depositional environment of Petani sands and the direction and timing of movement on field-bounding wrench faults.
