Thirty-five years of exploration wells lookback in Brunei

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 49th Ann. Conv., 2025

Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) is the primary upstream and downstream oil and gas operator in Brunei and have been operating in the country for almost 95 years. This presentation will discuss the highlights of exploration activities carried out by BSP in the last thirty-five years (1990-2025) and how BSP’s exploration execution strategy has re-acted to learn from subsurface well results, availability of new technologies, and global demand and supply conditions. A total of 166 onshore and offshore exploration wells were drilled between 1990 and 2025 in BSP’s exploration acreage. These exploration wells can be categorized into wells targeting multiple play types, such as near-field exploration (NFE) wells, while others as outstep exploration wells testing edges of play limits from proven field trends or wells targeting deeper reservoirs beneath producing fields.

This presentation will examine in further detail the selection of prospects that were drilled based on their chances of success, volume attractiveness, and the evolving commercial landscape. It also discusses the corresponding exploration well results over the years and how the exploration strategy is learned and adapted.
