Where to perforate? Where to fracture? – workflow to select and rank intervals for completion

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 47th Ann. Conv., 2023

This paper comprehensively describes the workflow and best practices for the selection of completion intervals in a well using 1D analysis to answer the questions: ‘Where to Perforate’ and ‘Where to Fracture’. A multi-disciplinary approach led by petrophysics, geomechanics and validated by reservoir engineering is presented. The workflow can be adopted for conventional and unconventional reservoirs. The selection of zones for perforation and completion is a critical decision especially for exploratory and appraisal wells. An integrated petrophysical analysis to mark zones with good hydrocarbon saturation, hydrocarbon flow units and storage capacity is complemented by geo-mechanical analysis to mark zones with geo-mechanical properties conducive to hydraulic fracturing. Creation of single well reservoir models populated with properties from the interpreted log, geological understating, and analogue data to predict production from zones to rank targets for perforation and fracturing. We illustrate the practical considerations and applications of the proposed workflow which serves as a reference text for geoscientists and engineers working on selecting reservoir zones for completion.
